New on The Guardian blog: why women leave academia

By Joern Fischer

There’s an excellent post on “why women leave academia” over at The Guardian Higher Education blog by Curt Rice (thanks, Euan, for highlighting it to me!). It pretty much reflects why I, too, have thought about leaving academia more than once — even though I’m not a woman! Point 1 particularly resonates with me:

“Young women scientists leave academia in far greater numbers than men for three reasons. During their time as PhD candidates, large numbers of women conclude that (i) the characteristics of academic careers are unappealing, (ii) the impediments they will encounter are disproportionate, and (iii) the sacrifices they will have to make are great.”

Yet another reason to change academic culture, and do so soon! To read the full post, visit The Guardian website here.
